1. Research Professorship

The Research Professorship provides funding to full professors who have made significant contributions to cancer research and are dedicated to mentoring the next generation of researchers.

The Research Professorship Award has been given based on the following criteria,

  • Comparative Effectiveness Research in Breast Cancer
  • Drug Development
  • Translational Research
  • Awards are given based on individual merit and availability of funds.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for the Research Professorship:

  • The applicant must be a physician (MD, DO, or international equivalent with explanation) working in any country with a full-time faculty appointment in a clinical department at an academic medical center
  • The applicant must currently hold the rank of full professor (or equivalent) at an academic medical center.
  • The applicant should have made significant contributions that have changed the direction of cancer research.
  • The applicant must serve as a research mentor to researcher(s) in training, and must be planning to continue to provide leadership in the area throughout the award period.
  • The applicant should lead a research team in conducting cancer research.
  • The applicant must be an IAO member in good standing or submit a membership application with grant application
  • The applicant expect to spend 75% of time during the award period dedicated to research (applies to total research, not just the proposed project), including leading a team of researchers (in the lab and/or clinic) and mentoring junior faculty and trainees
  • Individuals with an endowed professorship from their own institution are eligible to apply for this award.

2. Career Development Award

The Career Development Award (CDA) of IAO provides research funding to clinical investigators who have received their initial faculty appointment, as they work to establish an independent clinical cancer research program. This research must have a patient-oriented focus, including a clinical research study and/or translational research involving human subjects.

Awards are given based on individual merit and availability of funds.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for the Career Development Award:

  • The applicant must be a physician (MD, DO of international equivalent) working in any country.
  • The applicant must be in the first to third year of a full-time primary faculty appointment in a clinical department at an academic medical institution at the time of grant submission.
  • The applicant must have a valid, active medical license in the country where the research will be conducted at the time of application.
  • The applicant must have completed productive postdoctoral research and demonstrated the ability to undertake independent investigator-initiated clinical research.
  • The applicant must be an IAO Member or have submitted a membership application with the grant application. To apply for membership, or to renew your existing membership, please visit http://www.iaoncology.org/index.php
  • The applicant should be able to commit more than 50% of full-time effort in research (applies to total research, not just the proposed project) during the award period.
  • The applicant should have a mentor from the sponsoring institution who must provide a letter of support. If the mentor is not an IAO Member, a supporting letter from an IAO Member from the sponsoring institution must be included.
  • Eligible physicians are allowed to hold only one grant from IAO at a time.
  • Be up-to-date and in compliance with all requirements (e.g., progress reports, final reports, budget summaries, etc.) of any past grants received from IAO.

3. Long - Term International Fellowship

The IAO Long-term International Fellowship (LIFe) provides early-career oncologists by providing the support and resources needed to advance their training by deepening their relationship with a mentor from the developed countries. During the one-year fellowship, the recipients receive valuable training and experience, which they use to effect change in cancer care in their home country.

Awards are given based on individual merit and availability of funds.

Eligibility

All of the following criteria must be met in order to qualify for the Long-term International Fellowship:

  • The applicant must be a Life Time member of IAO, or a pending member awaiting acceptance.
  • The applicant must be a physician (MD, DO, or international equivalent) who has completed a subspecialty training program.
  • The applicant must be a citizen of a country categorized by the World Bank as Low-Income, Lower-Middle-Income, or Upper-Middle-Income.
  • The applicant must have less than 10 years of experience in the field of oncology.
